This are pictures from mom and dad's houseboat trip. They purchased a houseboat in Nashville, TN, in the Fall of 1968. June, Phil, and John joined them on the houseboat for Thanksgiving. Right after that they traveled from there down the Nashville River, the Ohio River, and the Mississippi River and got to New Orleans around Christmastime. John joined them in New Orleans. From there they headed along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (with John to Biloxi) to Carabelle, FL. John joined Junius there (Angie waited with friends in Florida) and strapped on extra barrels of gasoline and waited for good weather and headed out into the open Gulf waters at about 10pm one night to get to Fort Meyer on the West Coast of Florida. One of the engines went out during the night and we had some navigation problems but we finally started finding identifible bouys the next day and corrected our course and got to Fort Meyer by the evening. Junius and Angie spent much of the remaining Winter in Florida and then in May headed across Florida and started up the Alantic Intracoastal Waterway. After ending his first year in college, John joined them in Charleston, SC, and continued with them up to Washington, DC. In Elizabeth City, NC, June and Phil joined the three of them to go through the Great Dismal Swamp up to the Norfolk area and then a little further North up the Cheasapeake Bay and into the Potomac. At some point they headed back down to Norfolk where Phil was stationed in the Navy. A night or two later, Junius, Angie, and John watched the first man landing on the moon on a 13" b&w TV with lousy reception in a marina in the middle of nowhere along the Potomac River in rural Virginia.
Soon, we made it to Washington, DC, where we got a slip at the Ft. Washington Marina just south of Washington. John lived on board the houseboad during the summer before heading back to school at the University of Maryland for the Fall. In August, he left for a few days to go to the Woodstock Music Festival with his old friends Terry Mahoney and Bill Kenyon from Turkey. During the summer mom and dad entertained lots of people on the houseboat including Caroline and Norris and their dog Lucy. In the Fall they sold the houseboat and headed to California before soon buying a trailer and traveling all over in that. (John)
