Trip to Istanbul and the Princes' Islands with Terry Mahoney and Another Friend

This was a more extensive trip, probably for about 9 to 10 days, where we spent some time in Istanbul and then took a side trip to the Princes Islands and then returned back to Istanbul. A Turkish friend of Terry (I can't remember his name) came with us for the first few days and then returned home. This trip was in the summer of 1966. I remember buying a pipe in the Grand Bazaar and then smoking it all day long like I was really cool and then getting really sick in the early evening. I also remember Terry and I smoking Turkish cigarettes and Terry ended up setting his mattress on fire (smoldering) in the student hostel we stayed at in Istanbul. I ran out to a kiosk and bought a bottle of Gazoz (a flavored soda water) and between that and filling the bottle from the bathroom we managed to eventually put it out. There were two other men sleeping in the top bunks and they never woke up... I also remember eating very fresh fish fried on a boat served with Turkish bread and thinking it was the best thing I ever tasted. This was right at the end of the Galata Bridge in front of Yeni Cami.
